This morning, Pope Leo XIV received in the New Aula of the Synod the participants of the annual meeting of moderators of international associations of the faithful, ecclesial movements, and new communities, which takes place from May 21 to 22, 2026, organized by the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life.

During his speech, the Holy Father highlighted the relevance of the charisms of the Holy Spirit, especially in the context of the proximity to Pentecost. Leo XIV expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, emphasizing the responsibility of the attendees in managing various lay realities at the international level, and the importance of strengthening communion among them.

The Pontiff explained that the concept of "governing" in the Church transcends mere coordination of religious needs, as the Church was established by Christ as a sign of his salvific will. In this sense, ecclesial governance must be oriented towards the spiritual good of the faithful, reflecting the sacramental nature of the Church, which combines an institutional dimension with divine communion.

Leo XIV emphasized that governance within associations of the faithful must be a gift of the Holy Spirit, recognized by the community and exercised for the benefit of all. He stressed that this leadership should not be used for personal interests nor imposed from above, but should arise from free choices that reflect a common discernment.

The Pope also listed essential characteristics of good governance, such as mutual listening, co-responsibility, and transparency. Furthermore, he reminded that effective leadership promotes the active participation of all members of the community, avoiding the concentration of power in a few hands.

In his address, the Holy Father urged the moderators to be custodians of the memory and identity of their associations, while being attentive to contemporary pastoral challenges. Openness to historical and cultural realities is fundamental for belonging to a community to be authentic and fruitful.

The Pope concluded his speech by thanking the participants for their work and dedication, recognizing that associations and ecclesial movements are a valuable gift to the Church. He encouraged them to care for and foster the charisms and gifts they possess, assuring them that the Church supports them in their mission. Finally, he invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, for all present.
